We recommend Surfshark as the best virtual private network (VPN) for Fire TV Sticks based on our testing, research, and experience. Surfshark is easy to use, affordable (starting at $1.99/mo), and didn’t give us any issues with unblocking popular streaming services.

Alternatively, we also recommend NordVPN (starting at $2.99/mo) and ExpressVPN (starting at $6.67/mo).

NordVPN's Fire TV app didn’t let us down for speed or streaming support, and its latest speed test results showed little to no slowdown while we connected to its servers. ExpressVPN makes up for its high cost by providing a reliable server network and multiple cybersecurity tools.

Let’s dig into the details of why these are the best Fire Stick VPNs and discuss which VPNs didn’t make the cut.

How we tested the best VPNs for Fire TV Stick

We selected the top three VPNs for Fire TV Stick by personally testing and comparing a variety of factors and security features between different VPN providers. These factors include:

  • Price: Surfshark and NordVPN start at less than $5 per month, which we consider affordable. ExpressVPN starts at over $8 per month, which is slightly more expensive, but we think the price could be worth it for how easy and reliable it is.
  • Speed: We didn’t experience any issues with internet connection speeds, bandwidth, or buffering while using our top recommended VPNs.
  • Streaming: We had little to no issues streaming content from popular services with Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN.
  • Privacy and security: Our top picks had no issues with DNS or WebRTC leaks during our tests. They also provide high-level encryption and haven’t had any major known breaches from hackers.
  • Ease of use: All three Fire TV apps were easy to use, though we preferred the Surfshark and ExpressVPN interfaces over NordVPN.

Who it’s best for

Surfshark makes sense for anyone who wants an affordable VPN that’s a breeze to set up and use on a Fire TV Stick. It also makes sense if you have a lot of devices to use on a VPN because Surfshark provides unlimited simultaneous connections.

What we liked

Surfshark pricing starts at $3.99/mo, easily below both Nord ($2.99/mo) and ExpressVPN ($12.95/mo). And while you might think this makes Surfshark cheap in terms of quality, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

We found the Surfshark Fire TV app to be one of the best for user-friendliness and streaming support. It was easy for us to watch Netflix with Surfshark and unblock other popular streaming platforms, including Disney+.

We thought it was especially helpful that you can log in to the Surfshark Fire TV app without the slog of manually using the Fire TV Stick remote to input your username and password. Instead, simply get a code from a Surfshark app on another device (we used the iOS app on an iPhone) and spend just a few seconds logging in.

The server selection screen was also more intuitive than many other VPN apps we tested. We had no issues setting up favorite servers for quick access, navigating the server list, or searching for specific servers.

The Surfshark app with available server locations, favorite server list, and a list of locations.

What we didn’t like

We had no glaring issues with Surfshark while testing its Fire TV app, but we could see why you might prefer NordVPN or ExpressVPN over Surfshark. After all, Surfshark is quite the new face on the VPN scene, having launched in 2018. By comparison, NordVPN was founded in 2012 and ExpressVPN was founded in 2009.

And there’s something to be said about experienced companies providing top marks for reliability, as Nord and ExpressVPN have proven themselves time and again (including in our own testing).

Perhaps a sign of Surfshark’s youthfulness is that it just recently had an independent audit of its no-logs policy in 2023, five years after launching its service. ExpressVPN has had multiple audits over the years, including its no-logs policy in 2022. NordVPN recently (in 2022) had a third independent audit of its no-logs policy.

Who it’s best for

NordVPN makes sense if you want a trusted and reliable VPN that works year after year. It also makes sense if you want to keep your monthly price below $5, as Nord starts at $3.99 per month.

What we liked

Similar to Surfshark, Nord makes it easy to log in to its app using a Fire TV Stick. This includes using a QR code or PC/mobile verification. We did the mobile verification on our phone, which was a piece of cake.

Once we were in, we had no issues testing different streaming apps. Everything was fast and smooth, with no errors or slow streaming speeds. In fact, in our latest round of testing, NordVPN topped the charts and maintained internet speeds well while we connected to servers in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.

Granted, we do expect at least a small amount of slowdown in internet speeds when connecting to a VPN. This is because your internet connection has to go through an additional server — which may be located across the world — to encrypt your data. Even so, we were impressed by NordVPN's speed test results.

In general, we like how NordVPN encrypts your connection and maintains high levels of privacy. We think Nord has done an excellent job over the years to prove it’s a trustworthy company that backs up its claims with fast speeds and reliable service.

What we didn’t like

The NordVPN Fire TV app wasn’t as streamlined as the Surfshark or ExpressVPN apps. We found the layout much less inviting, especially since the home screen is just a bunch of big blocks that represent the different servers you can connect to.

NordVPN's Fire TV app interface with different servers to connect to.

This interface wasn’t quite as useful as Surfshark, with its list of servers you can easily scroll through, or as aesthetically pleasing as ExpressVPN, with its minimalistic style.

Who it’s best for

ExpressVPN makes sense if you want a Fire TV app that’s straightforward and easy to use for both VPN beginners and veterans alike. ExpressVPN is also known for its high levels of privacy and security, as well as support for popular streaming services.

What we liked

ExpressVPN is an excellent choice if you want to learn how to use a VPN on a Fire TV Stick. The interface is super simple to understand, and you can connect to servers worldwide within seconds of logging in.

We think paying a bit of a premium for this VPN makes sense if you don’t want to deal with clunky interfaces and want a simple solution for streaming from your Fire TV Stick. Overall, we had no issues using ExpressVPN to unblock regional content from Disney+ and Netflix.

What we didn’t like

This is more of a minor inconvenience, but you have to manually type your username and password to log in. It honestly doesn’t take more than a minute if you’re quick with your Fire TV Stick remote and don’t have the most complicated password ever, but it’s still annoying.

Other than that, we found the ExpressVPN Fire TV app was very easy to install and use, and we had no speed or buffering issues while streaming.

Honorable mentions

We tested many different VPNs for this list and some didn’t quite hit the mark to be considered part of our top recommended VPNs for Fire TV Sticks. In particular, CyberGhost and IPVanish didn’t reach the same levels as Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN.

CyberGhost

We like that CyberGhost starts at $2.11 per month, making it super affordable. We’ve also had good results when testing its speed, privacy, and security. But our experience using it with the Fire TV Stick left a bit to be desired. We typically want to use VPNs to stream content on Fire TV Sticks, but we ran into multiple issues trying to use CyberGhost with Netflix and Disney+.

This included not being able to load Disney+ at all because of an error message (as we were connected to a CyberGhost U.K. server).

Disney+ error message.

Keep in mind that CyberGhost has streaming-optimized servers, which means you’re supposed to pick a specific server depending on which streaming service you want to use and the regional library you want to access.

CyberGhost VPN connecting a UK server.

For example, you can choose a U.K. server that’s optimized for using Netflix with Fire TV Sticks. That’s what we chose and it didn’t work with Disney+, which is something we wanted to test. But it also didn’t work very well with Netflix: We had issues loading the Netflix menus and it didn’t appear to load U.K.-specific content.

You don’t really have these streaming issues with our top VPN choices, and you don’t have to worry about choosing a specific server for each streaming service you use. Just about any server will do with Surfshark, NordVPN, or ExpressVPN, making the whole streaming experience a lot easier than with CyberGhost.

IPVanish

We generally don’t view IPVanish as the most trustworthy VPN around because of an incident in its company history when it was formerly known as Highwinds Network Group. It had advertised a strict no-logs policy, but the company released private user information to the U.S. government in 2016.

Why did it have this information if it supposedly had a no-logs policy? We’re not sure, but it’s a red flag. And that doesn’t mean things haven’t changed over the years, but it’s not a good look.

We also weren’t impressed with the IPVanish Fire TV app. We had to manually type in our login information, which is a hassle using the Fire TV Stick.

And we immediately had issues trying to load Disney+ while connected to a U.K. server. Note that this was the same error we had when using CyberGhost.

IPVanish login page.

We also had long loading times when trying to use Netflix while connected to a U.K. server, so our overall experience with IPVanish was below average.
